IKELA is a Bonobo, the fourth species of great ape.
Bonobos are also known as Pygmy Chimpanzees. It wasn't until early
in the 20th century that scientists realized that Bonobos are a
different species from Chimpanzees. Bonobos are known for their
peaceful ways. They rather make love, not war. As I said, they are
extremely intelligent.
Ikela was born at the San Diego Zoo in 1991 and still lives there
with her mate, Maiko.
